Welcome to my page
_
I am Professor of Philosophy of Science and Metaphysics in the Dept of Philosophy & History of Science in the University of Athens, Greece. After a Physics degree in the University of Patras, Greece, I was awarded in 1989 a scholarship from the Greek State's Scholarship Foundation to study Philosophy. I got an MSc in History and Philosophy of Science in 1990 and then a PhD in Philosophy of Science in 1994, both from King's College London. Between 1995 and 1998, I was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Philosophy Department of the London School of Economics. I returned to Greece in July 1998, spent a year doing my military service in the Hellenic Navy, and took up my academic post in Athens in June 1999. In 2008 I was elected member of l’Academie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS).
The BJPS years
Between 1993 and 1998 I was first Assistant Editor and subsequently Deputy Editor of the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, under the editorship of David Papineau. During the academic year 1997-1998 I sat on the Committee of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science.
The European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA)
I was one of the founding members of the EPSA and served as its first elected President from November 2007 to October 2009. My recounting of how EPSA was formed can be found here.
Here is what EPSA stands for:
EPSA was brought to life by the recognition that the time was ripe for a forum that would bring together professional philosophers of science and students from the whole of Europe (and the rest of the world) and foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among them. The general aim of the EPSA is to promote and advance philosophy of science in Europe. It will do this by furthering contacts among philosophers of science in Europe; by ensuring that information relating to philosophy of science in Europe is regularly circulated; by supporting, on the international level, progress in philosophical studies of science; and by promoting the public understanding of science within the learned and educated public.
The third conference of EPSA (EPSA11) took place in Athens, 5-8 October 2011. Click here for the conference website and for the poster. Here is my opening speech to the conference.
Metascience
Since September 2009, my colleague Theodore Arabatzis and I have become Editors of Metascience.
Metascience is a review journal which publishes high quality, comprehensive reviews of books in the fields of history and philosophy of science and science and technology studies. Metascience specialises in innovative styles of reviewing, including book symposia, essay reviews, survey reviews and standard reviews. It is the aim of Metascience to have the widest possible coverage. Thus, books which are not reviewed are presented in short descriptive notices. Metascience is non-specialist in that reviews are accessible to a wide cross-section of the science studies community.
