Teaching duties

  • More than 33 courses ( semester ) for the undergraduate students at Physics Department of Athens University on 5 different titles.
  • More than 50 Nuclear Physics Laboratory classes.
  • More than 40 diploma thesis on experimental Particle Physics topics.
  • More than 17 semester courses for graduate students of Particle Physics Master Degree.
  • Supervision on 5 Master thesis and 3 Ph.D. thesis.

Research activity

Until now, I participated in 13 experiments of Particle Physics at CERN, in collaboration with members of Athens University and other groups from European countries.
The output of this work has been published in 90 papers at known magazines ( e.g. Íuclear Physics B, Physics Letters B, Z. Phys. C-Particles and Fields, Íuclear Instruments and Methods, Íuclear Physics Á, etc) and more than 40 articles in conference proceedings.

Since 1987 I have the responsibility of a Greek research group. I had also the role of the spokesperson of the WA83 (CERN SPS) collaboration, aiming in the study of Soft Photon production in hadronic collisions. This topic completed with data from WA102’ set-up.
The year 2000 I re-established my contribution to Heavy Ion Physics within NA57 and ALICE collaborations. From the year 2003 I am the representative of the Greek group in ALICE experiment and a member of the ALICE collaboration board.

The three first experiments I took part have used the bubble chamber detector for the measurement of hadronic interactions. In the first one, I have been member of the group which has organized the first laboratory of High Energy Physics at Athens University. I worked at all steps of the programs, collection of the data, measurements and reconstruction of events, simulations, production of Physics results and publications submitted to scientific papers.

Among the next 9 experiments, 8 of them are counter experiments which took place at the OMEGA spectrometer at the SPS accelerator of CERN and one of them at the CPLEAR facility of CERN.

I took part in different stages of these experiments, like the preparation of Letter of Intents, Proposals, data taking, data reconstruction , triggering etc.
In all of them I worked on the data analysis of experimental data, the simulation of the experiments, the paper writing, the presentation at conferences etc.
I had very small contribution to LEP experiments. Only one diploma thesis with ALEPH data . At the first stage of LHC I signed the CMS letter on intent.

In the framework of the study of soft photon production in hadronic interactions, searching for a possible excess over all the known sources (exp. WA83, WA91’ and Wa102’), and with the role of the spokesperson of WA83 collaboration, I had financial support for more than 10 years from the OMEGA group at CERN, the General Secretariat of Research in Greece, the University of Athens, a Greek-UK program and a Greek-Russian program, in order to cover the necessary meetings of the researchers.

At 2002 an effort was done in order Greece remain a member of the ALICE collaboration and since 2003 a group of scientists from Nuclear and Particle Physics Section of Athens University is a member of ALICE. I have the responsibility of representing the Greek group at the ALICE collaboration board. The members of the group have undertaken projects related to hardware and software, within the ALICE experiment. The participation to ALICE has been supported by the Greek Funding Agency, the Ministry of Education and the University of Athens.
