Education
Professor Christiana Mitsopoulou received her Ph.D. (1989) from the Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (N.K.U.A.), whereas part of the experimental processes of her doctoral dissertation took place at NCSR ‘Demokritos’.
She continued her postgraduate studies at the University of London (Queen Mary & Westfield College and UCL), in liquid and solid NMR.
Career Summary
She has joined the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry since 1981 as a Researcher and was promoted to Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. Since 2010, she is the Director of this Laboratory as well as Director of the MSc Program “Inorganic Chemistry and its Industrial Applications”.
She has also served for many years as Director of the Section of Inorganic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemical Technology and Environmental Chemistry.
In September 2017, she was elected as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry.
During her professional career she has worked as a visiting researcher in several research institutes and universities as NCSR: “Demokritos”, PNNL Palo Alto in California, USA, Queen Mary &Westfield University, EPFL in Switzerland, etc
She teaches Undergraduate (Inorganic Chemistry) and postgraduate courses (Catalysis, Homogeneous Photocatalysis, Spectroscopic Methods of Determination, Renewable Energy and Hydrogen, New Technologies in Education) in N.K.U.A..
Since 2001, she is teaching at the Hellenic Open University (EAP) in the Natural Sciences undergraduate program and in MSc Catalysis program. She has written five Textbooks, among them are: 'Basic Principles of Inorganic Chemistry', 'Inorganic Chemistry: Elements', 'Laboratory Exercises.'’
Her research interests include:
(a) ligand design and synthesis of organometallic and complex compounds, (b) theoretical and experimental studies of properties –structure relationships; (b) photochemical reactions / photocatalysis / photosensitization; (c) hydrogen production from solar energy; (e) Bioinorganic Chemistry and medicinal applications; (g) Computational Chemistry; (e) Environmental Applications of Inorganic Chemistry.
Career Evolution and Highlights
She was principal investigator or member of the research group in more than 25 research or infrastructure projects and has organized / participated in the organizing or/and in the Scientific Committees of more than 30 international and national conferences. She also participates in the Management Committee of three COST actions.
She has acted as a reviewer in international journals (ACS, RCS, Elsevier) as well for the evaluation of research programs (Greek, European, Bulgarian Academy , FP7, Horizon 2020, COST) etc
Prof. Mitsopoulou also participates in the Editorial Committee of the International Journals Open Chemistry and The Scientific World Journal.
She has been Chairman of the Hellenic Hydrogen Association, member of the Steering Committee of DOATAP, member of committees of IKY and ASEP, member of the curriculum committee for the High Schools in Greece.
For the period 2012-2017, she was President of the Supreme Chemical Council of the State of Greece.
