When inorganic nanoparticles are used as the carriers (i.e., gold, iron oxide or silicon) the nature of their chemical composition allows us to take advantage of their properties (i.e., optical, magnetic, thermal) for imaging and therapy. Combining these advantages we engineered peptide-coated gold nanospheres, nanorods and hollow nanoparticles, and employed them to initially manipulate the functions of endothelial cells and consequently angiogenesis.
