QUE SERA, SERA (Doris Day, 1956)

The song was written by Jay Livingston, music by Ray Evans, sung by Doris Day. It’s the theme of the Hitchcock thriller «The Man Who Knew Too Much», starring James Stewart and Doris Day. It won the Oscar for best song in 1956.

When I was just a little girl,
I asked my mother, what will I be?
Would I be pretty, would I be rich?
Here’s what she said to me:

Que sera, sera,
What ever will be, will be,
the future’s not ours to see,
Que sera, sera,
what will be will be.

When I grew up and fell in love,
I asked my sweetheart, what lies ahead?
Will we have rainbows day after day?
Here’s what my sweetheart said:

Que sera, sera,
What ever will be, will be,
the future’s not ours to see,
Que sera, sera,
what will be will be.

Now I have children of my own,
they ask their mother, what will I be?
Would I be handsome, would I be rich?
I tell them tenderly:

Que sera, sera,
Que sera, sera,
What ever will be, will be,
the future’s not ours to see,
Que sera, sera,
what will be will be. ...

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND (Bob Dylan, 1963)

How many roads must a man walk down,
before you call him a man?

Yes, ’n’ how many seas must a white dove sail,
before she sleeps in the sand?

Yes, ’n’ how many times must the cannon balls fly,
before they’re forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind;
the answer is blowin’ in the wind.

How many times must a man look up,
before he can see the sky?

Yes, ’n’ how many ears must one man have,
before he can hear people cry?

Yes, ’n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows
that too many people have died?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind;
the answer is blowin’ in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist,
before it’s washed to the sea?

Yes, ’n’ how many years can some people exist,
before they’re allowed to be free?

Yes, ’n’ how many times can a man turn his head,
pretending he just doesn’t see?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind;
the answer is blowin’ in the wind.

RIVERS OF BABYLON (Boney M, 1978)

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.

When the wicked
carried us away in captivity,
required from us a song.

Now how shall we sing the lord’s song in a strange land?

When the wicked
carried us away in captivity,
requiring of us a song.

Now how shall we sing the lord’s song in a strange land?

Let the words of our mouth
and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight.

Let the words of our mouth
and the meditation of our hearts
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.

By the rivers of Babylon (dark tears of Babylon)
there we sat down (You got to sing a song)
Ye-eah we wept, (Sing a song of love)
When we remember Zion. (Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)

By the rivers of Babylon (Rough bits of Babylon)
There we sat down (You hear the people cry)
Ye-eah we wept, (They need that ???)
When we remember Zion. (Ooh, have the power)

THE LOGICAL SONG (Supertramp, 1983)

When I was young it seemed that life was so wonderful
a miracle oh it was beautiful magical
and all the birds in the trees well they d be singing so happily
joyfully playfully watching me
but then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible
logical responsible practical
and they showed me a world where I could be so dependable
clinical intellectual cynical

There are times when all the world’s asleep
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man
won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am

Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical
liberal fanatical criminal
won’t you sign up your name we’d like to feel you’re
acceptable, respectable a vegetable

There are times when all the world’s asleep
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man
won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am...

WE ARE THE WORLD (USA for Africa, 1984)

Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie

There comes a time when we need a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can’t go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We’re all a part of God’s great big family
And the truth - you know love is all we need

(Chorus)
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, send ’em you your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us
By turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

(Repeat Chorus)

When you’re down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There’s no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let’s realize
That one change can only come
When we stand together as one

(Repeat Chorus)

TWIST IN MY SOBRIETY (Tanita Tikaram, 1988)

Album: Ancient Heart - 1988

All God’s children need travelling shoes,
drive your problems from here.

All good people read good books,
now your conscience is clear

I hear you talk girl,
now your conscience is clear.

In the morning I wipe my brow,
wipe the miles away.

I like to think I can be so willed,
and never do what you say.

I’ll never hear you,
and never do what you say.

Look my eyes are just holograms;
Look your love has drawn red from my hands;
From my hands you know you’ll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety

We just poked a little pie
for the fun people had at night.

Late at night don’t need hostility
the timid smile and pause to free.

I don’t care about their different thoughts;
different thoughts are good for me.

Up in arms and chaste and whole,
all God’s children took their toll.

Look my eyes are just holograms;
Look your love has drawn red from my hands;
From my hands you know you’ll never be,
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety.

Cup of tea, take time to think, yea,
time to risk a life, a life, a life.

Sweet and handsome, soft and porky,
you pig out ’til you’ve seen the light,
pig out ’til you’ve seen the light

Half the people read the papers,
read them good and well.

Pretty people, nervous people,
people have got to sell,
News you have to sell

Look my eyes are just holograms;
Look your love has drawn red from my hands;
From my hands you know you’ll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety...

WIND OF CHANGE (Scorpions, 1989)

Take me to the magic of the moment of glory night
where the children of tomorrow dream awake in the wind of change.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON (Queen, 1991)

Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we now the score
On and On, does anybody know what we are looking for...
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody wants to take it anymore
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up maybe flaking
But my smile still stays on.

Whatever happens, I’ll leave it all to chance
another heartache, another failed romance
on and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I’m learning, I must be warmer now
I’ll soon be turning right the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I’m aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up maybe flaking
But my smile still stays on

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow and but never die
I can fly my friends
The show must go on
The show must go on
I’ll face it with a grin
I’m never giving in
On - with the show -
I’ll top the bill, I’ll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the -
On with the show -
The show must go on...

CALL ME AL (Paul Simon, 1990)

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I soft in the middle now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
The rest of my life is so hard!
I need a photo-opportunity,
I want a shot at redemption!
Don't want to end up a cartoon,
In a cartoon graveyard...

Bonedigger, Bonedigger,
Dogs in the moonlight.
Far away, my well-lit door.
Mr. Beerbelly, Beerbelly,
Get these mutts away from me!
You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore...

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I short of attention?
Got a short little span of attention,
And whoa, my nights are so long!
Where's my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who'll be my role-model?
Now that my role-model is...
Gone... gone,
He ducked back down the alley,
With some roly-poly, little bat-faced girl.
All along... along...
There were incidents and accidents,
There were hints and allegations...

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!
Call me Al ...

A man walks down the street,
It's a street in a strange world.
Maybe it's the Third World.
Maybe it's his first time around.
He doesn't speak the language,
He holds no currency.
He is a foreign man,
He is surrounded by the sound, sound ...
Cattle in the marketplace.
Scatterlings and orphanages.
He looks around, around ...
He sees angels in the architecture,
Spinning in infinity,
He says, Amen! and Hallelujah!

If you'll be my bodyguard,
I can be your long lost pal!
I can call you Betty,
And Betty, when you call me,
You can call me Al!
You can call me Al...

TEARS IN HEAVEN (Eric Clapton, 1993)

Written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings

Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same, if I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on,
’cause I know I don’t belong
here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven?

I’ll find my way through night and day,
’cause I know I just can’t stay
here in heaven.

Time can bring you down; time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging please,
begging please.

Beyond the door there’s peace I’m sure,
and I know there’ll be no more
tears in heaven.

Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on,
’cause I know I don’t belong
here in heaven.
