Research Interests
The ALICE Experiment at the LHC.
The ALICE Collaboration has built a dedicated heavy-ion
detector to exploit the unique physics potential of heavy
ion interactions at LHC energies. Our aim is to study the
physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy
densities, where the formation of a new phase of matter,
the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), is expected. For this
purpose, we are carrying out a comprehensive study of the
hadrons, electrons, muons and photons produced in the
collision of heavy ions. In addition to heavy systems, the
ALICE Collaboration will study collisions of lower mass
ions, which are a means of varying the energy density, and
protons, which provide reference data for the
nucleus-nucleus collisions. The experiment started taking
data on December 2009 with proton beams at 900 GeV
center-of mass-energy.
