Hi there! My name is John (Ioannis) and I am a PhD student at the Mathematics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Feel free to look for something interesting in the research toolbox. You can find my CV in the about me page. Here are some highlights and projects I have been recently working on:
Moment-Type Estimators for the Dirichlet and the Multivariate Gamma Distributions
This study presents new closed-form estimators for the Dirichlet and the Multivariate Gamma distribution families, whose maximum likelihood estimator cannot be explicitly derived. The methodology builds upon the score-adjusted estimators for the Beta and Gamma distributions, extending their applicability to the Dirichlet and Multivariate Gamma distributions. This paper is currently under revision by the Journal of Multivariate Analysis. Check the preprint here.
Cumulative Link Mixed-Effects Models in the Service of Remote Sensing Crop Progress Monitoring
This study introduces a cumulative link modeling (CLM) approach to monitor crop progress over large areas using remote sensing data. Random effects are incorporated to capture the inherent inter-seasonal variability. Model performance is evaluated on eight crops using in-situ data from Nebraska, USA, spanning 20 years. This paper was published open-access in Biometrics, by Oxford Press University. Check the paper here.
Best Statistics Paper for Young Statisticians 2021 Award
I was granted the "Best Statistics Paper for Young Statisticians" award by the Greek Statistical Institute during the 2021 Panhellenic Statistics Conference. The conference paper presented was titled "Regression-type approaches for prediction of crop stage percentages". A later version of this work can be found in "Cumulative Link Mixed-Effects Models in the Service of Remote Sensing Crop Progress Monitoring (Oikonomidis and Trevezas, 2024)". Check the Uoa Hub announcement.
Fox Bytes: A Greek Data Science Channel
Are you interested in Statistics and Data Science? Welcome to Fox Bytes! We are a group of academics who love our profession and - whenever we find some spare time - build courses about math, statistics, programming, and many other things that excite us. Our goal is to turn complex concepts into bite-sized courses. Join our YouTube channel where we unravel the beauty of mathematics and the ingenuity of coding!
Research Toolbox
Science is demanding by nature, and the right tools can make a significant difference in productivity. I have assembled a research toolbox that helps me streamline work processes, automate repetitive tasks, and generally manage projects efficiently. It contains links to coding tutorials, AI tools, databases, and so on. You can also find some notes and cheatsheets I have been working on. May you find something useful!
Eudoxos MSc & PhD Student Association
I am a member of the Mathematics Department MSc & PhD Student Association, "Eudoxos". As such, I have the pleasure to work with some extraordinary people, Tassos, Kostas and Chrysoula, organizing the Mathematics' Club, a weekly rotating seminar of postgraduate and PhD students. Chrysoula and I coordinate the talks for the Statistics and Operations Research sector. Check the club's website to find out the topics of the upcoming talks.
