Georgios Vasilopoulos

Astrophysicist at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Me at work

My name is Georgios Vasilopoulos, and I am an astrophysicist specializing in observational high-energy astrophysics, with a focus on X-ray pulsars and ultra-luminous X-ray systems.

I completed both my undergraduate and master’s studies at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) before pursuing my PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) while working at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE). After completing my doctorate, I moved to New Haven to join Yale University as a Postdoctoral Associate, a position I held for nearly three years. Subsequently, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Strasbourg, contributing to the XMM-Newton SSC team and the Galaxies, High Energy, Cosmology, Compact Objects & Stars group.

In February 2023, I returned to Greece as a research associate, supported by a research grant from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) to lead Project ASTRAPE at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA). Between 2023 and 2024, I was appointed Assistant Professor (tenure track) at NKUA; however, due to administrative issues at the governmental level, the position was annulled.

Feel free to explore my website, where you’ll find highlights of my research, and projects that I have been working. I hope you enjoy browsing!
