Georgios Vasilopoulos

Astrophysicist at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Me at work

My name is Georgios Vasilopoulos, and I am an Assistant Professor in Astrophysics at the Physics Department of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. My research focuses on observational high-energy astrophysics and the study of accreting objects, with a particular emphasis on X-ray pulsars and ultra-luminous X-ray systems.

I completed both my undergraduate and master’s studies at NKUA before pursuing my PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) while working at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE). After completing my doctorate, I moved to New Haven to join Yale University as a Postdoctoral Associate, a position I held for nearly three years. Subsequently, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Strasbourg, contributing to the XMM-Newton SSC team and the «Galaxies, High Energy, Cosmology, Compact Objects & Stars» group. In February 2023, I returned to Greece, having been awarded funding by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) to conduct research at the University of Athens and the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA) as part of Project ASTRAPE.

Feel free to explore my website, where you’ll find highlights of my research, and projects that I have been working. I hope you enjoy browsing!
