OPENING ADDRESS
To the
International Conference TREE SEEDS 2002
On behalf of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens I have the pleasure to welcome you at the opening session of the International Conference TREE SEEDS 2002. To our foreign guests particularly, I extend a warm welcome to Crete, where I am sure you will discover some of the genuine flavour of Greece.
Since our University is the
co-organiser in the conference and has been involved in several aspects of its
organisation, I have had the opportunity to become aware of the multitude of
the scientific, cultural and economic facets in the subject of your
conference., The importance of the tree seeds as regeneration material (for
both reforestation and urban uses) is easily grasped by the layman. Tree seeds
are at the same time a valuable source of a multitude of products. Therefore,
their scientific, environmental and economic importance brings forth a whole
array of issues related to their storage, conservation, germination, handling
and utilisation.
I am certain that your conference
will bring new light to old and recent problems alike. At the same time, it
will help to foster new, multinational, research cooperation schemes. I wish
every success to your scientific presentations and discussions, a fruitful and
stimulating exchange of ideas, a useful set of conclusions and proposals and
last but not least an unforgettable stay at the beautiful area of Chania.
