THE “WE REAL COOL” PROJECT 2015-16

Inspired by the musicality of Gwendolyn Brooks’s 1966 poem “We Real Cool,” our 2015-16 students came up with their own song versions of it: Eleni Chalvatzi’s smooth hip-hop meets Maria Pantsiou’s low-bap; Liana Damaschin and Georgia Patoula demonstrate the virtue of back-to-basics and remind us of the ways African-American music started—a voice, a bit of snapping, a bit of clapping; Theano Gympaki enlists the help of two African friends for the authentic Black experience; and Monica or Irene Skylakaki have nothing on our own Vassiliki Papadopoulou and her inspired acoustic guitar! ΤΟ «ΕΙΜΑΣΤΕ ΟΙ ΓΑΜΑΤΟΙ» ΠΡΟΤΖΕΚΤ, 2015-16

Εμπνευσμένες από τη μουσικότητα του ποιήματος-διαμαρτυρίας της Αφροαμερικανής Γκουέντολιν Μπρουκς «Είμαστε οι Γαμάτοι» (1966), φοιτήτριες της «Αμερικανικής Ποίησης» Δ’ εξαμήνου το μετέτρεψαν σε τραγούδι, η κάθε μία με τον δικό της μοναδικό τρόπο: η χιπ-χοπ της Ελένης Χαλβατζή συναντά το low bap της Μαρίας Πάντσιου, ενώ Λιάνα Damaschin και Γεωργία Πατούλα επέλεξαν τη μίνιμαλ οδό, θυμίζοντας τις απαρχές της Αφροαμερικανικής μουσικής. Τη Θεανώ Γυμπάκη συνέδραμαν δύο Αφρικανοί φίλοι της για μια αυθεντική «μαύρη» εκδοχή, ενώ η Βασιλική Παπαδοπούλου εμπνέεται εναλλακτικά με ακουστική κιθάρα. Απολαύστε τα εδώ.

THE BODY PROJECT EXHIBITION

This is a collection of the best audiovisual projects to come out of “The Body Project,” an end-of-semester assignment for the students of the 7^th semester elective course “Bodily Fictions.” The point of this course was to creatively and critically interpret a text of American literature or culture pertaining to the body.
